Richard Parks Bland

Politician

Richard Parks Bland was a prominent American politician and U.S. Representative from Missouri who served from 1873 to 1895 and again from 1897 until his death in 1899. He was a leading advocate for the bimetallism movement, which supported the coining of silver in addition to gold to increase the money supply. Bland became nationally known as "Silver Dick" for his passionate and persistent fight for the free coinage of silver. His most significant legislative achievement was the Bland–Allison Act of 1878, which required the U.S. Treasury to purchase a certain amount of silver and put it into circulation as silver dollars.
