Robert Crippen is a highly decorated American astronaut, naval officer, and aerospace executive who piloted the first-ever Space Shuttle mission, STS-1. He went on to command three additional shuttle flights, including STS-7, STS-41-C, and STS-41-G, making him one of the most experienced early shuttle commanders. After retiring from NASA, Crippen held several executive positions in the aerospace industry, including with Lockheed Martin and Thiokol Propulsion. His contributions were pivotal in establishing the Space Shuttle program as a viable and reusable space transportation system, earning him numerous accolades, including the Congressional Space Medal of Honor.
