Robert Laurent was a pioneering American modernist sculptor and a key figure in the direct carving movement. Born in France, he moved to the United States as a child and became a prominent artist associated with the Ogunquit, Maine art colony. Laurent was one of the first American artists to embrace abstraction, creating simplified, powerful forms in wood, alabaster, and bronze. His influential career also included teaching positions at the Art Students League of New York and Indiana University, shaping a new generation of sculptors.
