Robert Purvis was a prominent American abolitionist and activist who dedicated his life to the anti-slavery movement. Born to a wealthy cotton broker and a free woman of color, he used his considerable resources to support the cause of emancipation. He was a key organizer of the Underground Railroad in Philadelphia, reportedly helping more than 9,000 enslaved people escape to freedom.
