Salmon Portland Chase was an influential American politician and jurist during the Civil War era. He served as the 23rd Governor of Ohio and later represented the state in the United States Senate, becoming a prominent anti-slavery leader. Appointed by Abraham Lincoln, he was the 25th U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, where he established the national banking system and the first federal currency. Lincoln later appointed him the sixth Chief Justice of the United States, where he presided over the impeachment trial of President Andrew Johnson.
