Simone Veil was a French lawyer and politician who served as a minister of health under Valéry Giscard d'Estaing. A survivor of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, she was a staunch advocate for human rights and European integration. She is best known for her instrumental role in legalizing abortion in France in 1975 with the law that bears her name. Veil later became the first elected President of the European Parliament and was a revered figure in French public life until her death.
