Sofia Kovalevskaya was a pioneering Russian mathematician who made significant contributions to analysis, partial differential equations, and mechanics. She was a trailblazer for women in science, becoming the first woman to obtain a doctorate in mathematics from a European university. Kovalevskaya also held the distinction of being the first woman appointed to a full professorship in Northern Europe. Her groundbreaking work on the rotation of a rigid body, known as the 'Kovalevskaya top', earned her the prestigious Prix Bordin from the French Academy of Sciences.
