Saint Jerome was a priest, confessor, theologian, and historian, best known for his translation of the Bible into Latin, known as the Vulgate. Born in Stridon on the border of Dalmatia and Pannonia, he received a thorough education in Rome, where he was baptized. He chose a life of asceticism in the desert and later settled in Bethlehem, where he produced his most important scholarly works. His extensive writings and biblical translations profoundly influenced Western Christianity, and he is recognized as a Doctor of the Church.
