Standing Bear

Activist

Standing Bear was a chief of the Ponca, a Native American tribe located in the Niobrara River valley in Nebraska. In the 1870s, the U.S. government forcibly relocated the Ponca to Indian Territory in Oklahoma, a journey that resulted in widespread death and suffering. After his son's death, Standing Bear's journey to return the body to their ancestral homeland for burial led to his arrest and the landmark 1879 court case, Standing Bear v. Crook. In this case, he successfully argued that Native Americans are "persons within the meaning of the law," securing a major victory for Native American civil rights.
