Theocritus was an ancient Greek poet from Syracuse, Sicily, and the creator of ancient Greek bucolic poetry. He flourished in the 3rd century BC, writing during the Hellenistic period. His poems, known as the Idylls, celebrate the beauty of nature and the simplicity of rustic life, often featuring shepherds and mythological figures. Theocritus's pastoral style profoundly influenced later Roman poets like Virgil and the entire tradition of European pastoral literature.
