Walter Frederick Mondale was an American politician, diplomat, and lawyer who served as the 42nd vice president of the United States from 1977 to 1981 under President Jimmy Carter. A U.S. senator from Minnesota from 1964 to 1976, he was the Democratic Party's nominee for president in the 1984 election, but lost to Ronald Reagan. Mondale is credited with transforming the office of the vice presidency into a more active and influential advisory role, establishing the model of an activist vice president. After his political career, he served as the U.S. ambassador to Japan and remained an influential voice in the Democratic Party.
