Socialite

Samuel Ward McAllister was a prominent American socialite and self-proclaimed arbiter of New York society during the Gilded Age. He is best known for collaborating with Caroline Schermerhorn Astor to define the elite social class and for coining the phrase 'the Four Hundred'. This term referred to the supposed number of individuals who could comfortably fit into Mrs. Astor's ballroom, representing the crème de la crème of high society. McAllister chronicled his experiences and social rules in his 1890 memoir, 'Society as I Have Found It', solidifying his legacy as a key figure of his era.
