James Butler 'Wild Bill' Hickok was a celebrated lawman, gunfighter, and gambler of the American Old West, gaining fame for his skills with a pistol. He served as a scout for the Union Army during the Civil War and later gained renown as a marshal in the Kansas cowtowns of Hays and Abilene. His legendary reputation was built on numerous gunfights, which were sensationalized in popular dime novels of the era. Hickok was murdered while playing poker in a saloon in Deadwood, Dakota Territory, famously holding a hand of aces and eights.
