Wilhelm Franz Canaris was a German admiral and chief of the Abwehr, the German military intelligence service, from 1935 to 1944. Initially a supporter of Hitler, he grew disillusioned with the Nazi regime and its atrocities. Canaris actively worked against the regime, using his position to save numerous individuals and pass intelligence to the Allies. Implicated in the 20 July plot to assassinate Hitler, he was arrested and subsequently executed at the Flossenbürg concentration camp just weeks before the end of the war in Europe.
