William Hone

Writer

William Hone was an English writer, satirist, and bookseller whose work challenged the political and religious establishment of his time. He is most famous for his three sensational trials in 1817 for publishing parodies, where he successfully defended himself against charges of seditious and blasphemous libel. His acquittal was a landmark victory for press freedom in Britain and made him a public hero. In his later years, he focused on antiquarian and miscellaneous publications, such as 'The Every-Day Book,' which chronicled popular customs and folklore.
