William Thomas Green Morton was a pioneering American dentist and physician. He is primarily remembered for being the first to publicly and successfully demonstrate the use of inhaled ether as a surgical anesthetic. This historic event took place on October 16, 1846, at Massachusetts General Hospital, in what became known as the Ether Dome. Although his claim to the discovery was fraught with controversy and legal battles, his demonstration revolutionized surgery by making painless procedures possible.
