Alan Turing

Computer Scientist

Alan Mathison Turing was a pioneering British mathematician, computer scientist, logician, and cryptanalyst. He is widely considered to be the father of theoretical computer science and artificial intelligence for his formalization of the concepts of algorithm and computation with the Turing machine. During World War II, Turing was instrumental in breaking German ciphers at Bletchley Park, significantly shortening the war and saving millions of lives. Despite his monumental contributions, he was prosecuted in 1952 for homosexual acts and died in 1954, receiving a posthumous royal pardon in 2013.
