Albert Gallatin was a Swiss-American politician, diplomat, ethnologist, and linguist who served as a prominent figure in American politics for nearly fifty years. He is best known for his long tenure as the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury from 1801 to 1814 under Presidents Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. Gallatin played a crucial role in negotiating the end of the War of 1812 with the Treaty of Ghent and later served as the U.S. Minister to France and Great Britain. In his later years, he became a respected scholar, founding New York University and serving as the first president of the American Ethnological Society.
