Physicist

Antony Hewish was a pioneering British radio astronomer and Nobel laureate renowned for his significant contributions to physics. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1974, jointly with Martin Ryle, for his decisive role in the discovery of pulsars. This discovery, made with his graduate student Jocelyn Bell Burnell, opened a new branch of astrophysics and provided the first direct evidence for the existence of neutron stars. Throughout his career at the University of Cambridge, Hewish's work fundamentally advanced our understanding of interplanetary scintillation and compact cosmic objects.
