Aristophanes

Playwright

Aristophanes was an ancient Greek comic playwright from Athens and a master of Old Comedy. Eleven of his forty plays survive virtually complete, providing the only real examples of a genre of comic drama known as Old Attic Comedy. His plays are characterized by their sharp political satire, sexual and scatological innuendo, and fantastic or absurd plots. Often called the 'Father of Comedy' or the 'Prince of Ancient Comedy', his works have profoundly influenced the course of Western literature and theatre.
