Arthur Schopenhauer

Philosopher

Arthur Schopenhauer was a German philosopher best known for his 1818 work, 'The World as Will and Representation'. His philosophy espoused a form of pessimistic metaphysics, arguing that the phenomenal world is the product of a blind and insatiable metaphysical will. He developed an atheistic metaphysical and ethical system that has been described as an exemplary manifestation of philosophical pessimism. Schopenhauer's work profoundly influenced later thinkers such as Friedrich Nietzsche, Ludwig Wittgenstein, and Sigmund Freud.
