Bernard 'Bernie' Ebbers was a Canadian-born American businessman and the co-founder and CEO of the telecommunications company WorldCom. Under his leadership, WorldCom grew aggressively through numerous acquisitions, becoming the second-largest long-distance telephone company in the United States. His tenure, however, ended in a massive accounting scandal that led to the company's bankruptcy, one of the largest in U.S. history. Ebbers was subsequently convicted of fraud and conspiracy and sentenced to 25 years in federal prison.
