Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour, was an Italian statesman and a leading figure in the movement toward Italian unification. As Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Sardinia, he skillfully used diplomacy and strategic alliances to expand its territory and influence across the Italian peninsula. His efforts were pivotal in the Second Italian War of Independence against Austria, which significantly advanced the cause of a united Italy. Cavour became the first Prime Minister of the newly formed Kingdom of Italy in 1861, a position he held for only three months until his death.
