Chauncey Wright

Philosopher

Chauncey Wright was an influential American philosopher and mathematician born in Northampton, Massachusetts. A key figure in the early development of pragmatism, he was a member of The Metaphysical Club alongside Charles Sanders Peirce and William James. Wright was a staunch defender of Darwin's theory of evolution, applying principles of scientific empiricism and fallibilism to philosophical questions. Despite his significant influence on his contemporaries, his early death and limited published works left his contributions less known to the wider public.
