Edith Stein

Philosopher

Edith Stein was a German Jewish philosopher who became a prominent intellectual in the early 20th century. After converting to Catholicism in 1922, she became a Discalced Carmelite nun, taking the name Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. Her profound philosophical and theological writings sought to bridge the phenomenological tradition with Catholic thought. Arrested by the Gestapo due to her Jewish heritage, she was martyred at Auschwitz in 1942 and later canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church.
