Edward Forbes

Naturalist

Edward Forbes was a pioneering British naturalist, palaeontologist, and marine biologist from the Isle of Man. He is best known for his work on the distribution of plant and animal life, making significant contributions to the field of biogeography. Forbes developed the 'azoic hypothesis,' which incorrectly postulated that life could not exist in the deep sea below 300 fathoms. Despite this hypothesis later being disproven, his extensive dredging work laid crucial groundwork for future deep-sea exploration and oceanography.
