Joy Adamson

Naturalist

Joy Adamson was a naturalist, artist, and author best known for her book, Born Free, which described her experiences raising a lion cub named Elsa. Born in Troppau, Silesia, Austria-Hungary (now Opava, Czech Republic), she later moved to Kenya, where her work with wildlife began. Her detailed paintings of the local flora and fauna, as well as her conservation efforts, brought international attention to East African wildlife. Tragically, Adamson was murdered in the Shaba National Reserve in Kenya, but her legacy continues through the Elsa Conservation Trust.
