Ernst Kaltenbrunner was a high-ranking Austrian SS official during World War II and a major perpetrator of the Holocaust. After Reinhard Heydrich's assassination in 1942, he was appointed chief of the Reich Security Main Office (RSHA), which included the Gestapo, Kripo, and SD. In this powerful role, he commanded vast authority over the Nazi police state and was instrumental in administering the concentration camp system and the Final Solution. As the highest-ranking SS leader to be tried at Nuremberg, he was convicted of war crimes and crimes against humanity and executed by hanging in 1946.
