Gaius Valerius Catullus

Poet

Gaius Valerius Catullus was a prominent Latin poet of the late Roman Republic whose work is considered some of the finest in Latin literature. He was a leading figure of the Neoterics, a group of avant-garde poets who turned away from classical epic to focus on personal, smaller-scale themes. His surviving poems, often intensely personal and emotional, explore themes of love, passion, friendship, and loss, most famously centered around his affair with a woman he called 'Lesbia'. Catullus's direct and often raw style had a profound influence on later poets, including Ovid, Horace, and Virgil, securing his legacy for millennia.
