Giuseppe Zangara

Assassin

Giuseppe Zangara was an Italian-American bricklayer and anarchist known for his assassination attempt on President-elect Franklin D. Roosevelt. On February 15, 1933, in Miami, Florida, Zangara fired a pistol into a crowd, missing Roosevelt but fatally wounding Chicago Mayor Anton Cermak and injuring four others. He claimed to hate all rich people and rulers, acting out of a deep-seated anger fueled by chronic stomach pain he attributed to capitalism. Zangara was quickly tried, convicted of murder, and executed in the electric chair just 33 days after the assassination attempt.
