Harold Everett Hughes was an American politician who served as the 36th Governor of Iowa from 1963 to 1969. He later represented Iowa as a United States Senator, serving in that capacity from 1969 to 1975. A former truck driver and a prominent voice for recovering alcoholics, Hughes was known for his progressive social views and his strong opposition to the Vietnam War. After retiring from politics, he dedicated his life to religious work and founding lay-religious treatment centers for addiction.
