Henry Alexander Wise was a prominent American lawyer, politician, and diplomat from Virginia. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives and as the 33rd Governor of Virginia from 1856 to 1860. As governor, he signed the death warrant for abolitionist John Brown, a pivotal event leading up to the Civil War. During the American Civil War, Wise served as a brigadier general in the Confederate States Army.
