Horace Porter was a distinguished American soldier, diplomat, and author who served as a Union Army officer during the Civil War. As an aide-de-camp to General Ulysses S. Grant, he witnessed many of the war's most critical moments and was later awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery. After the war, Porter had a successful career in business and diplomacy, most notably serving as the United States Ambassador to France. He is also remembered for his tireless efforts to locate the lost remains of American Revolutionary War naval hero John Paul Jones, which he successfully recovered in Paris.
