Ian James Thorpe is a retired Australian competitive swimmer who specialized in freestyle but also competed in backstroke and the individual medley. He won five Olympic gold medals, the most won by any Australian, and was the most successful athlete at the 2000 Summer Olympics with three gold and two silver medals. Known as the "Thorpedo" for his incredible speed, he broke 13 individual long-course world records and was the first person to win six gold medals in one World Championship. After retiring from swimming, he has become a prominent advocate for mental health awareness and LGBTQ+ rights.
