Ignatius of Loyola was a Spanish Basque Catholic priest and theologian who co-founded the religious order known as the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). He became the first Superior General of the Society of Jesus and was a leading figure in the Counter-Reformation. Ignatius is renowned for his spiritual methodology detailed in his work, the 'Spiritual Exercises,' which offers a guide for prayer and discernment. Canonized by Pope Gregory XV in 1622, he is venerated as the patron saint of soldiers, the Society of Jesus, and various dioceses and regions.
