Jacques Lipchitz

Sculptor

Jacques Lipchitz was a pioneering Lithuanian-American cubist sculptor, born in what was then the Russian Empire. He moved to Paris in 1909, where he joined the artistic circle of Montparnasse and became a key figure in the development of Cubist sculpture. His early work was characterized by angular, architectural forms, which later evolved into more dynamic and baroque-inspired creations known as 'transparent sculptures.' Fleeing Nazi persecution during World War II, he immigrated to the United States in 1941, where he continued to produce monumental works until his death.
