Jefferson Davis was an American politician who served as the president of the Confederate States from 1861 to 1865. Before the Civil War, he represented Mississippi in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives and served as the U.S. Secretary of War. After the conflict, he was captured and imprisoned for two years but was never tried for treason. He remained a prominent, albeit controversial, figure and symbol of the 'Lost Cause' until his death.
