Dame Joan Sutherland was an Australian dramatic coloratura soprano noted for her contribution to the renaissance of the bel canto repertoire from the late 1950s through to the 1980s. She possessed a voice of remarkable agility, accurate intonation, a splendid trill, and a stupendous upper register. Often hailed as "La Stupenda" ("The Stupendous One"), she performed in virtually every major opera house in the world alongside her husband and frequent collaborator, conductor Richard Bonynge. Her extensive discography and numerous accolades cemented her legacy as one of the greatest opera singers of the 20th century.
