John Keble

Theologian

John Keble was an influential English Anglican priest, theologian, and poet who became a leading figure in the Oxford Movement. Born in Fairford, Gloucestershire, he was educated at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, where he achieved a distinguished academic career. His 1833 sermon 'National Apostasy' is widely considered the inaugural event of the Tractarian movement, which sought to reintroduce High Church principles into the Church of England. Keble is also remembered for his devotional poetry, most notably his collection 'The Christian Year,' and for having Keble College, Oxford, named in his memory.
