John Lyly was a prominent English writer, poet, and courtier during the Elizabethan era. He is best known for his prose romance Euphues: The Anatomy of Wit, which gave rise to the term 'euphuism,' a highly ornate and artificial writing style. Lyly's works, including numerous plays, significantly influenced his contemporaries, including William Shakespeare. Despite his literary success and position in court, he died in relative poverty.
