Lucian Freud

Painter

Lucian Freud was a British painter and draftsman, specializing in figurative art, and is known as one of the foremost 20th-century portraitists. Born in Berlin, he was the grandson of Sigmund Freud and moved with his family to London in 1933 to escape the rise of Nazism. His early work was associated with surrealism, but he later became renowned for his intensely realistic and often unsettling portraits and nudes, rendered in thick, impastoed paint. Throughout his long and prolific career, Freud's commitment to observing and depicting the human form earned him international acclaim and a place among the most important artists of his time.
