Patrick Pearse

Revolutionary

Patrick Pearse was an Irish teacher, barrister, poet, and writer who became a key leader in the Irish nationalist movement. He was deeply committed to the preservation of the Irish language, founding St. Enda's School (Scoil Éanna) to educate boys in a bilingual and culturally Irish environment. As a member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood, he was a principal architect of the 1916 Easter Rising against British rule. After the Rising's failure, Pearse was executed by a British firing squad, becoming a martyr and an enduring symbol of Irish republicanism.
