Pearl Mae Bailey was an acclaimed American actress and singer who captivated audiences with her distinctively husky voice and warm, effusive stage presence. After starting her career in vaudeville, she made her Broadway debut in "St. Louis Woman" in 1946, for which she won a Donaldson Award. Bailey's career spanned across stage, film, and television, earning her a Tony Award for the title role in an all-Black production of "Hello, Dolly!" in 1968. Beyond her entertainment career, she was also an author and was appointed as a special delegate to the United Nations by several U.S. presidents.
