Sir William Davenant was an influential English poet, playwright, and theatre manager of the 17th century. He succeeded Ben Jonson as Poet Laureate in 1638 and was a prominent figure in the Caroline and Restoration literary scenes. A staunch Royalist during the English Civil War, he was rewarded by Charles II with a patent to open one of only two licensed London playhouses. His theatrical innovations, including the introduction of actresses to the English public stage and the use of movable scenery, had a lasting impact on British theatre.
