Catherine II, most commonly known as Catherine the Great, was the last reigning Empress of Russia, ruling from 1762 until her death in 1796. Her reign, the Catherinian Era, is considered the Golden Age of the Russian Empire and the Russian nobility. She came to power following a coup that overthrew her husband, Peter III, and she subsequently expanded the Russian Empire through conquest and diplomacy. Catherine was a patron of the arts and a proponent of Enlightenment ideals, corresponding with prominent philosophers like Voltaire and Diderot.
