Chaim Weizmann was a Zionist leader, statesman, and biochemist who served as the first President of Israel. Born in the Russian Empire, he became a prominent figure in the Zionist movement and was instrumental in securing the Balfour Declaration from the British government in 1917. As a distinguished chemist, he developed the acetone–butanol–ethanol fermentation process, which was of great importance to the British war effort during World War I. His diplomatic efforts and scientific achievements culminated in his election as president in 1949, a role he held until his death.
