Henry Walter Bates

Naturalist

Henry Walter Bates was an English naturalist and explorer who gave the first scientific account of mimicry in animals. He is most famous for his expedition to the Amazon rainforest with Alfred Russel Wallace, which began in 1848. Bates spent eleven years on the Amazon, amassing a vast collection of over 14,000 species, mostly insects, 8,000 of which were new to science. His observations of butterflies led him to develop the theory of protective adaptation now known as Batesian mimicry.
