James McHenry

James McHenry was an Irish-born American statesman, surgeon, and a key figure during the American Revolution and early republic. After serving as a military surgeon and secretary to General George Washington, he became a delegate to the Continental Congress. McHenry was a signer of the United States Constitution from Maryland and later served as the third United States Secretary of War under Presidents Washington and Adams. His legacy is preserved through Fort McHenry in Baltimore, which famously inspired the American national anthem, 'The Star-Spangled Banner.'
