George Shearing

George Shearing was a British jazz pianist who for many years led a popular jazz group that recorded for Discovery Records, MGM Records and Capitol Records. Blind from birth, he learned to play piano by ear and began his career in London before moving to the United States in 1947. He became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1956 and was renowned for his unique 'Shearing Sound,' a block chord style that influenced many other pianists. Over his long career, he composed over 300 titles, including the jazz standard 'Lullaby of Birdland,' and won two Grammy Awards.
